Kuta is where the Bali tourist boom has its roots. It began, in the late 1960s, as a rather sleepy beachside haven for surfers and hippies.

By the end of the 1970s, it had become a mini metropolis and a mecca for the young and the restless from all over the world.

Nowadays it still attracts large numbers of package tourists, mostly young party-goers seeking fun and sun at low cost.

Kuta is largely mid-market hotels and cheap guest-house accommodation; there are few villas or desirable residences in this location.
